Lawn Watering Conservation

On Monday, September 7, 2009 the outside water restriction were lifted.

Please note, fall is considered the best time to redo lawns because of soil temperature, lack of competition from weeds, and more consistent rain.

We encourage you to do this work in the fall, as restrictions could start next spring anytime between April and June, depending on water supplies.

New lawns should be mulched with straw or salt march hay to retain moisture; slice seeding and core aeration will help with overseeding.

Established lawns need only 1 inch of water per week, combined from rainfall and watering. Because pressures vary, it can be hard to tell when an inch has been applied. Putting a tuna fish or similar can under the sprinkler will tell you when to shut off or move to a new location.

In preparation, add organic material. Ideally, you should have 6" of loam.

Consider minimizing the area you plant. Even shade resistant seeds need at least two to four hours of sunlight each day. Ground covers can be more successful in these areas.
